Brett Byatt, a teacher who survived the collision, described the chaos that unfolded within the train carriages. He recounted how passengers were thrown around, with some suffering broken bones and deep lacerations. “It was like a scene from a movie,” Byatt said, emphasizing the suddenness and intensity of the impact. The East Midlands Railway (EMR) service, which was involved in the crash, collided with a slower-moving train, resulting in a catastrophic accident.
“The people in first class ended up with stomach and rib injuries because they went into the tables they have in first class. The way the EMR trains are structured with seats probably made it the worst setup for a crash,” Byatt explained. He noted that the seating arrangement—three-by-three and two-by-three configurations—caused passengers to collide with each other, with seats breaking backwards and injuring those behind them. “I’d say 90% of people in my carriage were hurt,” he added, mentioning a woman whose leg snapped under the force of the crash.
Byatt estimated that the collision occurred about five minutes into the journey, as the train was not traveling at full speed. He was standing near the doors, holding a stanchion, which he believes protected him from more severe injuries. While he initially felt shocked, Byatt now expresses frustration, questioning the safety of the older railway network. “I’m angry about the system, not at anyone specific,” he said. “Signal failures happen often, and I wonder why a driver’s life was lost over this.”
