Nevertheless, tsunami waves measuring less than one metre, or approximately three feet, were recorded in several locations following the main shock.

Initial Response and Casualty Figures

The earthquake was recorded at 4:58 am local time at a depth of 15 kilometres, which translates to roughly nine miles beneath the Earth’s surface. The epicentre was positioned off the north coast of Flores Island, situated about 68 kilometres, or 42 miles, northwest of the coastal town of Ende. This location places the quake in one of Indonesia’s most seismically active zones.

Rescue teams working in the port town of Maumere, the main settlement in Sikka Regency, discovered twenty bodies, six injured individuals, and two people still trapped beneath collapsed rubble. Fathur Rahman, who leads the city’s rescue operations, provided these figures to news agencies. The scene was chaotic, with video footage showing portions of buildings reduced to dust and debris while people screamed and fled through the streets.

Meanwhile, the national disaster mitigation agency, BNPB, reported a preliminary toll of one death and four injuries, noting that data collection was still ongoing. The discrepancy in figures reflects the challenging conditions as teams work to reach affected areas.

Challenges in Reaching the Epicentre

Nagekeo regency, located closest to the earthquake’s epicentre, has faced significant difficulties in receiving aid. Communications signals in the area were disrupted, and attempts to reach the region by road were blocked by landslides. Another rescue team is currently attempting to access Nagekeo by ferry, navigating through potentially hazardous waters.

Residents in Nagekeo reacted immediately to the shaking. Lukas Lotar, a thirty-one-year-old hospital customer service official, described the sudden intensity of the event. He noted that patients also fled the hospital as the jolt was substantial, and he observed cracked walls throughout the building.

“Suddenly it started to shake and I panicked,” Lotar told AFP. “Patients also fled the hospital, the jolt was big. I saw some walls were cracked.”

Yohanes Babo, a fifty-six-year-old Nagekeo resident, was at a local market when the earthquake struck. He expressed relief that he and others were already outside their homes when the tremors began.

“The shaking was strong. Thankfully, we were already outside the house,” Babo said. “People were panicking, running here and there. We’re evacuating for the time being … and trying to get to the hills. My family is safe. No one was harmed.”

Wider Impact Across the Archipelago

Approximately two thousand residents in Nagekeo evacuated to higher ground following the earthquake. Damage was reported to numerous houses, warehouses, and government facilities in the area. Authorities also noted traffic congestion and power outages affecting various parts of the regency.

The earthquake was felt across much of Flores Island, with initial reports indicating heavy damage in multiple locations. Yohanna Embu, a resident of Sikka within East Nusa Tenggara province, observed that many buildings sustained damage from the strong shaking. She specifically mentioned seeing the waiting room at Maumere’s port terminal collapse.

“Many buildings here were damaged … I saw that the waiting room at the port terminal in Maumere had collapsed,” Embu said.

Indonesia’s Seismic Vulnerability

Indonesia, comprising more than seventeen thousand islands, sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast arc of volcanoes and fault lines that runs through the Pacific Basin. This geological positioning makes the nation highly susceptible to both earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
