Eamonn Holmes recovering in hospital after stroke
GB News has confirmed that broadcaster Eamonn Holmes is currently receiving treatment in a hospital following a stroke. The incident occurred last week, and the channel noted that he was “taken ill” before the condition was identified. Holmes, who is 66 years old, is said to be “responding well to medical care,” with his team expressing hope for a quick recovery.
Career Highlights
Holmes has built a broadcasting career spanning several decades, with notable roles at Sky News and ITV. He joined GB News in 2022 as the host of its breakfast show, sharing the reins with Ellie Costello. Prior to this, he presented programs on UTV’s Good Evening Ulster and GMTV, which launched in January 1993. His tenure at GMTV lasted until 2005, after which he moved to Sky News to co-host Sunrise. Later, he partnered with Ruth Langsford on ITV’s This Morning, a relationship that began in 2010.
“Eamonn is a cherished figure within the GB News team,” said CEO Angelos Frangopoulos.
Earlier this year, a representative from Holmes’s family revealed that he and Langsford had “confirmed their marriage is over and are finalizing their divorce.” Despite these personal changes, his professional contributions have been widely recognized, including an OBE awarded in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List for his service to broadcasting.
Health Challenges
Before the recent stroke, Holmes had faced other health issues, such as spinal surgery and a double hip replacement. He has also been seen using a mobility scooter, which he described as a necessary aid. These challenges have not deterred him from continuing his work, though they highlight the toll of his long career in television.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to a portion of the brain is interrupted, as explained by NHS guidelines. Common signs include facial drooping, limb weakness, and speech difficulties. Immediate medical attention is critical when these symptoms appear, which underscores the urgency of the situation for Holmes.
Substitute for Holmes
Fellow GB News presenter Alex Armstrong is set to take over Holmes’s duties temporarily in the upcoming week. The channel has not provided further details about his condition or the expected timeline for his return to the airwaves.
