This was her first time abroad, a dream she had nurtured since graduating from Kabarak University in Kenya. Her younger cousin, Faith Korir, who had already settled in the country, became her support system. “She was glowing with excitement about her future,” Korir recalled, highlighting the optimism that accompanied Chebii’s arrival.
Life in Sydney proved challenging for Chebii, who often faced long commutes and physically demanding work. She shared a home with Korir in Liverpool, a city about 30km west of the CBD, and described her days as a mix of hardship and joy. “Every time she came home, she complained of back pain,” Korir noted, referring to the large rooms she was responsible for cleaning. Yet, her spirits remained high, with moments of laughter and creativity—like braiding Korir’s hair—making the struggle feel bearable.
Despite the physical toll, Chebii adapted quickly to her new environment. She found solace in her role at Meriton Suites, even as it tested her limits. “She was so excited to start the new position,” Korir said, reflecting on Chebii’s recent enthusiasm. This transition, however, was cut short when the tragic fall occurred, leaving the family with more than just grief.

Just days before the incident, Chebii’s family had received news of her new role at the hotel, which she seemed eager to embrace. “She was relieved to switch jobs,” her brother Amos Chebii shared, as he traveled to Australia to support his family during this difficult time.
