The parliamentary session came to a temporary halt as opposition figures made their demands clear. They argued that the government must acknowledge both the violence inflicted upon young demonstrators and the series of scandals that have plagued India’s educational testing system.

Gandhi’s Detention and Growing Movement

Rahul Gandhi, the prominent Congress party leader, had been briefly held by police on Tuesday following a sit-in demonstration outside the prime minister’s residence. During this earlier protest, Gandhi accused Modi of undermining the prospects for India’s younger generation. His sister, Priyanka Gandhi, who serves as a key strategist within the Congress party, experienced a similar brief detention on the same day. Police authorities later confirmed that both individuals were released.

The CJP movement began as a humorous online concept but has transformed into something far more substantial. On Monday, the organization orchestrated one of the largest anti-government demonstrations in recent memory. The protest drew an estimated fifty thousand participants to Delhi, despite police initially denying permission for a march toward parliament.

Violence and Aftermath

The Monday demonstration started peacefully but deteriorated by late afternoon. Police deployed teargas and conducted baton charges against the crowd, resulting in numerous injuries. Official figures indicated that sixty civilians and one hundred eighteen police officers sustained harm during the clashes. Authorities blamed protesters for instigating the confrontation, while movement organizers criticized what they described as heavy-handed tactics by law enforcement.

Among those injured was a woman who required intensive care and was placed on a ventilator. Amnesty International subsequently accused Delhi police of employing excessive force against demonstrators. The Indian Supreme Court declined to consider a petition alleging police brutality on Wednesday.

Protesters Hold Their Ground

Despite challenging weather conditions characterized by intense heat and humidity, over one thousand demonstrators remained stationed at the central Delhi protest site on Wednesday. Many had journeyed considerable distances to participate and declared they would not depart until their demands were met. Supporters continued sending food supplies, with some orders arriving from international locations. The protesters enjoyed meals consisting of biryani, pizza, rice, and dal.

Energy remained strong throughout the encampment as chants and songs echoed across the area. Ashutosh Ranka, speaking for the CJP, addressed the crowd with these words:

Government Response and Broader Support

While Prime Minister Modi has not yet issued a direct statement regarding the ongoing demonstrations, Education Minister Pradhan adopted a more moderate position in his initial comments. Previously dismissing the CJP participants as a “B-team of terrorists,” Pradhan now emphasized the government’s commitment to providing answers and implementing reforms.

In a social media message, Pradhan stated: “We owe them [students] answers, reforms and accountability. That is exactly what our government remains committed to delivering.” He further remarked that Indian students deserved better treatment than being used as political instruments.

Rahul Gandhi criticized the administration’s approach, asserting that the government avoided accountability and refused to engage in parliamentary debate on these matters. Congress leaders accused the Modi administration of neglecting student concerns and failing to address what they termed “brutality unleashed on students.”

Additional demonstrations supporting the CJP movement emerged in Mumbai and Bengaluru, attracting hundreds of participants. Several prominent opposition parties have publicly endorsed the students’ cause and condemned the police response to Monday’s events. Sandeep Dikshit, a senior political figure, was among those voicing support for the movement.

The CJP’s original demands centered on educational reforms and Pradhan’s resignation following repeated examination controversies.
