Flash Flood on Nepal-Tibet Border Leaves Over 400 Travellers Missing, Including 33 British Citizens

Thirty-three of those British nationals include a 13-year-old girl, according to Nepal’s tourism board. The disaster struck at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, when a sudden surge of floodwater swept through the Tibetan side of the river and cascaded back across the border into Nepal.

The Bhote Koshi, one of the most powerful glacial rivers in the eastern Himalaya, drains from the high-altitude basin near Mount Kailash and flows southward through Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts before joining the Ganges system. Its steep gradient and proximity to unstable moraine deposits make it particularly prone to sudden, destructive flooding when upstream material fails. In this case, Nepal’s foreign minister Shisir Khanal told parliament that initial indications pointed to an earthquake-triggered avalanche as the mechanism that sent the debris avalanche into the river channel, generating a catastrophic flood wave within minutes.

The Missing British Tour Group

Among the most widely reported cases is a guided expedition group operated by Alpine Eco Trek, a Kathmandu-based firm that specialises in high-altitude treks and pilgrimages in Nepal. The group had been undertaking a nine-day itinerary centred on Mount Kailash, the sacred peak revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. At the moment the flood struck, the party was in the process of crossing from Nepal into Tibet through the border land crossing near Gyirong county.

Travel logs associated with the group identify three men aged 65, 64, and 52, and seven women aged 44, 47, 51, 60, 63, 63, and 65, all British nationals. Two Irish citizens were also listed among the missing. Four Nepali guides employed by the operator, aged 38, 35, 45, and 29, have not been located either.

Operator’s Account of the Final Minutes

Kumar Adhikari, manager of Alpine Eco Trek, described the harrowing sequence of events in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said he maintained radio and phone contact with his guides until roughly 8:40 a.m., when their devices went silent. At that point, the group would have been inside the Tibetan immigration processing office at the crossing.

“I feel so sad. We are just thinking about what to do next. We are in pain at the moment, deep pain.”

Adhikari explained that the team had been operating under the assumption that the enclosed immigration facility would offer shelter from the weather and any minor water run-off. That assumption was shattered when footage released by China’s government showed floodwater inundating the Tibetan side of the crossing as well.

“We were hoping that inside it was safe. But later the video came from China’s government which (showed) even Tibet’s side was hit by the flood.”

Scale of Destruction and Casualties

Nepali police confirmed that 157 bodies had been recovered as of Wednesday, with more than 40 injured persons receiving treatment in hospitals across the affected districts. Verified video circulated widely showed dozens of people being swept away at the border crossing. In Nepal, houses, roadways, and sections of the electrical grid were obliterated. Officials in Tibet’s Gyirong county, where a separate mudslide struck the land crossing, voiced fears of “major casualties” and confirmed additional missing persons in that area.

The tourism board noted that more than 100 of the missing individuals had not yet had their nationalities confirmed, complicating the coordination of consular assistance. South Korea’s foreign ministry reported that eight South Korean workers at a nearby hydropower project were missing and ten others were stranded.

International and Diplomatic Response

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband issued a statement expressing deep concern over the flooding on the Nepal-China border, extending his thoughts to those affected and to British nationals and their families at home. The British embassy in Kathmandu urged all persons in the affected zones to follow local authority guidance.

A joint communique issued by the embassies of Australia, the European Union, Finland, France, Norway, and Switzerland alongside the British mission stated:

“We are deeply saddened by the devastating flooding in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts and surrounding areas. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster. We express our solidarity with the people of Nepal during this difficult time. We encourage all those in affected areas to follow the guidance of local authorities and official safety advisories as the situation continues to evolve.”

Travel Advisories and Regional Context

Local authorities in Rasuwa district and along the lower reaches of both the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers issued urgent advisories instructing tourists to exercise extreme caution, remain in designated safe areas, and relocate to higher ground if conditions warrant. Visitors were told to maintain regular contact with their hotels and travel agencies. Those with planned itineraries into the affected corridors over the coming days were advised to postpone their journeys until the situation stabilises.

The Nepal-Tibet border region, long a corridor for pilgrims and mountaineers heading to Mount Kailash and Mount Everest, has seen increasing numbers of foreign visitors in recent years. The convergence of a major pilgrimage route, a growing trekking industry, and fragile glacial geology means that a single upstream failure can place hundreds of people at risk within minutes. Rescue operations in the immediate aftermath are hampered by the remoteness of the crossing, the destruction of road access, and the ongoing risk of secondary landslides along the Bhote Koshi corridor.
