Tom Cruise Unveils Remarkable Transformation in Digger Trailer
A Career-Defining Role for the Action Icon
Tom Cruise unveils remarkable transformation in Digger – Tom Cruise unveils remarkable transformation in the newly released Digger trailer, showcasing his most dramatic physical change since Tropic Thunder. Warner Bros. has finally shared the complete trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy-drama, giving audiences their first look at Cruise as Digger Rockwell. The film, set for global release in early October, follows the world’s most influential figure on a mission to prevent an environmental disaster from destroying civilization.
Speaking at a Los Angeles promotional event, Cruise described the project as unlike anything in his extensive career. The actor revealed that both he and the director faced unprecedented creative challenges during production. “When you see this film, it’s totally original,” Cruise stated, highlighting the unique nature of their collaboration. The trailer features Cruise with a grey combover, noticeable pot belly, and a strong southern accent as an oil magnate whose corporation may have triggered a crisis capable of sparking nuclear war.
A Vision Realized Over a Decade
The story traces Digger Rockwell’s desperate journey to prove he remains humanity’s hope before his actions destroy everything. The ensemble cast includes John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde, all contributing to this ambitious production.
At the California premiere, Cruise shared that his admiration for Iñárritu dates back to the director’s 2000 film Amores Perros. “What a brilliant film. It was amazing,” Cruise told Variety, recalling his immediate reaction. “When I saw that film, I don’t know how you all felt, but I was like, ‘What the fuck? This guy!'” He praised the movie’s performances, design, color palette, and attention to detail, noting each element reflected the director’s exceptional vision.
Cruise and Iñárritu’s partnership began roughly seven years ago when the director presented Digger to the actor over several days, reading the screenplay aloud. “I’m listening to everything that’s in his mind, so that I can understand that, and then I know how to contribute to it, and bring that collaboration together. It was beautiful,” Cruise reflected. He added, “There’s nothing better than to physically and metaphorically stand on the edge of a cliff and go, ‘Let’s do this. And I trust you, and whatever we’re going to do, I know this is going to be a hell of an experience.'”
Cinematic Excellence Through Analog Innovation
In a video presentation during the Los Angeles celebration, Iñárritu explained that Digger’s concept emerged while finishing his 2015 masterpiece The Revenant, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director and secured Leonardo DiCaprio’s Best Actor trophy. “It was just after The Revenant when I had an idea,” the filmmaker remembered. “Not a script, not a film, just a relentless, recurring obsession that has endured through all these wild years. I knew who this character was. I knew how he spoke, how he survived, how he seduced reality into agreeing with him. But it took me 10 years to do this film, because I wasn’t looking for a story. I was looking for the right way of saying it. And it’s absurd, it’s dangerous, but certainly comedic, because the source of great comedy is tragedy.”
One particularly notable aspect of Digger involves its cinematography. The production utilized VistaVision, a high-definition analog film process originally developed during the 1950s that has experienced a remarkable resurgence in contemporary cinema. This technique has been employed for recent acclaimed productions including The Brutalist and One Battle After Another, demonstrating that analog filmmaking continues to offer distinctive visual qualities that digital formats cannot fully replicate. The combination of Iñárritu’s artistic sensibility, Cruise’s willingness to transform completely, and the timeless VistaVision process promises to deliver something truly special to audiences worldwide.
