Wells-Wonsley recalled Saturday, July 3, as the final day she witnessed her son alive. He prepared dinner for the household, embraced his mother, and departed. The following evening, concern mounted when she and her sister noticed the late hour without any word from Nolan. Multiple phone calls went unanswered.

“I said, ‘What?’ Because we know our children. Nolan isn’t one to [say]: ‘Oh, I’m going to throw caution to the wind and I’m going to stay here with this girl that I just met,'” Wells-Wonsley told the assembled audience.

Confusion deepened when a friend contacted her, suggesting Nolan remained on the island with a girl he had met. The Life360 tracking application indicated his phone had returned to Ocean Spring, where the family resided, creating further bewilderment about his whereabouts.

Agency Responses and Growing Frustration

Wells-Wonsley reached out to numerous organizations, each directing her elsewhere. The Mississippi department of marine resources contacted the Coast Guard. Ocean Springs police and the Jackson county sheriff’s department both indicated the matter fell outside their authority. She even visited a nearby hospital in hopes of finding him there.

Eventually, the Jackson county sheriff’s department accepted responsibility for the investigation. After midnight, the parents met with an officer in a McDonald’s parking lot to share details about Nolan. The officer’s brief acknowledgment prompted Wells-Wonsley’s question: “Where is the urgency?” She noted that, to their knowledge, no vessels had been deployed to search the waters that night.

Investigation Developments

The following morning, the family traveled to the island accompanied by Nolan’s high school football coach, who contributed his personal boat to the search effort. Sheriff John Ledbetter has publicly stated that he does not believe foul play contributed to Wells’ death and confirmed that the other individuals on the boat are cooperating fully with investigators.

While no suspects have been formally identified or detained in connection with Nolan’s case, three separate arrests have occurred in related matters. An Illinois man faces allegations of threatening police officers. An Ohio woman allegedly made threatening calls to both the Jackson county sheriff’s office and the George county chancery office. A California man was indicted for allegedly issuing violent threats on social media directed at Ashlee Cole, a Jackson county chancery court judge and stepmother of one of Nolan’s friends.

The state of Mississippi has not yet made its autopsy findings public. The Jackson county district attorney indicated the report would be released only after a grand jury convenes. Meanwhile, an independent autopsy commissioned by the family concluded that the cause of death remains inconclusive.
