Norman’s entry into the race follows Trump’s Friday announcement requesting Darline Graham to compete in the special Republican primary on August 11. If no candidate wins a majority, a runoff election would take place on August 25. The Republican nominee will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November midterm elections. Trump expressed strong confidence in Darline Graham through a Truth Social post, praising her family background and lifelong achievements.

Norman told CNN he had previously sought Trump’s backing but respected the president’s decision to support Darline Graham. He described her as a kind individual and affirmed that the endorsement would not diminish his determination to compete for the Senate seat.
I wanted [Trump’s] blessing to run and get his support. He decided to go with Darline, who’s a nice person, and he decided to go with her. And so I respect that. But it doesn’t deter my plans. I’m in this to win.
Background and Other Contenders
Florida Senator Rick Scott and Utah Senator Mike Lee publicly supported Norman’s candidacy on Friday before his formal announcement. Darline Graham, aged 62, was selected by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to serve temporarily on the Senate seat following her brother’s death on July 11. This appointment marked the first instance of a sibling replacing a deceased senator and the first woman to represent South Carolina in the upper chamber. Lindsey Graham passed away at age 71 from aortic dissection related to cardiovascular disease, according to preliminary medical examiner findings.
Darline Graham’s interim appointment covers the remainder of the term through January 3. Reports suggest she may pursue the full six-year Senate position but has not yet launched an official campaign. Other potential candidates include businessman Mark Lynch, who previously challenged Graham for the Republican nomination, attorney Duke Buckner, and Representative Nancy Mace. Norman, a 73-year-old member of the House Freedom Caucus, previously ran for South Carolina governor without success. He represents the state’s fifth congressional district, having been elected in 2017 after eleven years in the state legislature. Notably, Norman did not support Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
