Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman

Two Met Officers Face Charges Following Tragic Crash Involving Pregnant Woman

Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham confirmed that two Metropolitan Police officers are being charged after a collision involving an unmarked police car led to the death of a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child in south-east London. The incident occurred on the A20 near Kidbrooke Park on 17 October 2024, where the 38-year-old driver lost her life at the scene. She was later pronounced dead in hospital. The charges include causing death by dangerous driving for PC Chris Johnson and dangerous driving for former PC Danny Tomkins, as per an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The case, which has been deemed complex by the IOPC, has prompted the police to work closely with investigators as they progress. Both officers are set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May. Derham expressed the department’s condolences to the woman’s family and friends, who continue to mourn the loss of her and her child.

“Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident. The IOPC have conducted a thorough and complex investigation, and we have worked closely with them as their inquiries have progressed. It is important that nothing is said that could prejudice the court proceedings that will now follow, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage,” said Derham.
