Manhunt after attempted arson attack on synagogue

Arson Attempt at Finchley Reform Synagogue Sparks Manhunt

Two individuals are under investigation following an attempted arson attack at a London synagogue, where two bottles suspected of holding petrol were thrown toward the building. The incident, which occurred around 01:00 BST, involved suspects wearing balaclavas who also hurled a brick at the Finchley Reform Synagogue. No damage or injuries were reported. Police have classified the event as an antisemitic hate crime, underscoring the growing concerns within the community.

MP Condemns Rising Anti-Semitic Threat

Sarah Sackman, the Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green, expressed alarm over the recent attack, linking it to a pattern of antisemitic incidents in the area. “This shocking attempt to harm a local synagogue follows a series of alarming attacks on the Jewish community,” she stated. The MP emphasized the need for action, saying, “British Jews must be free to go about their lives without fear—whether taking their children to nursery or attending synagogue. We do not want to live behind ever higher walls.”

Community Security Trust Supports Investigation

The Community Security Trust (CST), which tracks antisemitism and provides security services, confirmed its collaboration with the police to address the situation. A spokesperson noted, “We are supporting the affected location and working closely with the Met to ensure the community’s safety.” The Metropolitan Police, meanwhile, highlighted its focus on the incident, which comes amid the ongoing inquiry into a previous arson attack on four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in Golders Green.

Police Urged to Identify Suspects

Det Ch Supt Luke Williams, a police representative, stated that the Met is aware of the community’s concern, particularly after the recent Golders Green incident. “We are working with the affected synagogue and meeting regularly with community leaders,” he added. The police are actively seeking witnesses and evidence, urging anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward. “Detectives are working urgently to identify the suspects,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness of the case.
