British Couple Killed in Spanish Wildfires: Victims Identified

British couple killed in Spanish wildfires - Spanish authorities have confirmed that a British couple were among the victims killed in Spanish wildfires that swept through the Almería province. Pete and Fran Gillam, residents of the village of Bédar, perished as flames engulfed their community on Thursday. Emergency teams are now conducting DNA testing to identify those who could not escape the rapidly spreading blaze.

Family Receives Heartbreaking Confirmation

The Gillams, who lived in Bédar—the area most severely affected by the disaster—were among the first to be formally identified. Their daughter, Danielle Gillam-Kirton, shared the devastating news on social media.

We are heartbroken to share that we have received confirmation from the police that Mum and Dad did not survive the fire. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers over the past few days. They have meant more to us than we can ever express.

Relatives had been anxiously searching for the couple since Thursday evening. Fran Gillam had sent a text message around 7pm indicating they were evacuating, but no further contact was made. Subsequent phone calls and messages went unanswered.

Identification Process Underway

Family members of unaccounted individuals have been asked to visit the local civil office to provide DNA samples. Many victims suffered severe burns, making visual identification difficult. Officials announced on Monday that the British couple were among the earliest confirmed casualties, alongside a Spanish man and his British wife. A French woman and a Belgian man were also identified.

These individuals represented the first identifications from twelve bodies found at the fire's epicenter. On Sunday, Andalucían authorities reported that a ninety-three-year-old British woman, injured during the disaster, later died in hospital.

Officials cautioned that the final missing persons count cannot be determined until autopsies are completed. Coordinators stated on Sunday that ten formal missing person reports had been filed.

Devastation in a British Community

The wildfire devastated the scenic village, which has a large British expatriate population. Flames moved so quickly that several residents could not flee in time. Burned vehicles now line the road leaving Bédar, and authorities confirmed that passengers inside these cars died while attempting to escape.

At least four additional British victims are expected, following the discovery of bodies within a right-hand-drive Honda Accord. One British man reportedly died inside his vehicle while trying to save his pets, according to a close friend.

She's in deep shock. At one point he needed to stop and she spoke to him on the phone. He had got the cats and was trapped in the car. They were speaking together for the last few minutes. That was how it ended.

Penelope Howe, aged fifty-four, shared these details about her friend's husband, who perished when flames engulfed his car during the evacuation of Los Gallardos in Almería province. Howe, who lives near Bédar, described the family's profound grief.

A persistent heatwave has scorched much of Europe, including Spain, creating tinderbox conditions that intensified the wildfire's destructive power. Dry vegetation combined with soaring temperatures has fueled blazes stretching from the Iberian peninsula to France. Scientists attribute the worsening situation to the climate crisis, which has accelerated recent heatwaves.

"Here climate change is having a very big impact, and we are in a state of climate chaos with situations that are practically unheard of, exceptional and increasingly explosive," remarked Juanma Moreno, leader of Andalucía's regional government.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office expressed solidarity with those affected: "Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the devastating wildfires in Spain. We are supporting British nationals affected and their families and remain in close contact with the Spanish authorities."
