A white British man, aged 28, was taken into custody at a residence located in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday. He continues to be held on suspicion of murder. According to the police force, their officers are not searching for additional suspects in relation to this case.
The former Conservative minister, who later became a spokesperson for Reform UK, was discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday. She had suffered severe injuries prior to her death. Police indicated that she may have passed away more than twenty-four hours before her body was found.
Public Response and Ongoing Investigation
Longman mentioned that no intelligence has emerged suggesting any broader danger to the general public. He also confirmed that investigators have received over one hundred twenty pieces of information from members of the public since launching their inquiry. He addressed the growing speculation circulating both online and in public discourse.
"We are aware of online and public speculation, particularly with regards to motive. Again, I urge people not to share or engage with that speculation. It's unhelpful," he stated.
The assistant chief constable continued by noting that such speculation does not assist their investigation and causes additional distress to Widdecombe's family and friends. He acknowledged the support provided by counter-terrorism officers from north-east and South Yorkshire police, who assisted with the arrest on behalf of Devon and Cornwall.
"Ms Widdecombe's family have been informed of the updates and continue to be supported by our specialist officers. Our thoughts remain with her family and friends at this incredibly difficult time," Longman added.
He reiterated that at this stage, there remains no information indicating a terrorism connection. Furthermore, police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the murder.
Timeline of Widdecombe's Final Hours
Widdecombe, who was seventy-eight years old, made her most recent television appearance on TalkTV shortly after eight o'clock on Wednesday morning. According to ITV News, she subsequently spoke with a researcher from Channel 5's Matt Allwright program before a scheduled interview at one o'clock in the afternoon.
Her final message to the staff member was reportedly transmitted at twelve nineteen in the afternoon. At twelve forty-eight, the researcher attempted to reach Widdecombe via a Zoom link for the show but received no reply.
Political Figures Respond
The police statement regarding the absence of political motivation came following an intervention by Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK. Farage traveled to Widdecombe's address when news of her death first emerged. Speaking with reporters on Saturday, he offered his perspective on the circumstances.
"From what I can see of it, from what I make out, this was premeditated murder. Whether it was politically motivated, whether it was someone with a grudge … I don't think it pays at this time to speculate," Farage remarked.
Chief constable James Vaughan of Devon and Cornwall police commented on Sunday that the force's operation has been progressing at a "lightning pace" throughout the previous forty-eight hours. He expressed satisfaction that a suspect is now firmly in custody.
"I am really pleased that we have a suspect firmly in custody," Vaughan said.
