Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’

Trade Relations Under Scrutiny

US President Donald Trump expressed his belief that the trade agreement between America and the United Kingdom remains flexible, stating it “could be adjusted at any time.” During an interview with Sky News on Wednesday, he emphasized that the UK had received a favorable deal, surpassing his expectations, but noted lingering tensions in the diplomatic bond.

“We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to,” Trump remarked, highlighting his view of the arrangement as advantageous. “It’s the relationship where when we asked for help, they weren’t there. When we needed them, they weren’t there. When we didn’t need them, they weren’t there. And they still aren’t there.”

Strains Over Middle East Issues

Recent weeks have seen growing friction between the US and UK leaders, particularly regarding the conflict in the Middle East. Trump has consistently criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his stance on the US-Israel war against Iran, even likening him to “no Winston Churchill” on one occasion. Despite these remarks, Trump acknowledged the upcoming state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla as a significant event.

“I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process,” Trump said, underscoring his focus on the visit. “The state of our relationship will not at all overshadow the royal state visit.”

UK’s Early Agreement on Tariff Deal

In May of the previous year, the UK became the first nation to finalize a tariff agreement with Trump following his return to the presidency. This deal involved reductions in import taxes for goods such as cars, aluminium, and steel. However, the recent discord over Middle East policies has cast a shadow over the broader partnership.

Trump, while initially praising Starmer, later described his administration’s immigration and energy strategies as “insane.” The leader’s comments reflect a nuanced view of the UK, recognizing its value while critiquing recent decisions that have strained the bilateral ties.

Anticipation for the Royal Visit

When asked about his expectations for the state visit in late April, Trump replied with enthusiasm. “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful,” he said, indicating that personal rapport would remain central to the event despite ongoing political disagreements.
