Belgium’s old guard fought valiantly but World Cup exit is end of their golden generation
Belgium's Golden Generation Ends After Valiant World Cup Fight
Belgium s old guard fought valiantly in North America, but the tournament's conclusion signals the close of an extraordinary era. The Red Devils' most decorated period in football history reached its emotional finale as they were eliminated from the World Cup. Manager Rudi Garcia's experienced squad had shown remarkable resilience through a difficult group stage, positioning themselves for a thrilling quarter-final encounter against Spain, the European champions.
Selection Crisis Deepens
Preparation for the crucial match was complicated by injury concerns. Amadou Onana arrived at the stadium on crutches following a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained during the round of sixteen triumph over the United States. Zeno Debast was left out of the starting eleven after disputes between Belgium and Sporting Club over his readiness, with the defender making only one substitute appearance throughout the tournament. Compounding the problems, Youri Tielemans was removed from the teamsheet shortly before kickoff after a warm-up injury.
Jérémy Doku returned to the starting lineup and looked significantly sharper than in earlier group matches. The Belgian winger enjoyed a strong individual performance against Pedro Porro, repeatedly finding space between the English defender and Lamine Yamal before cutting inside to trouble Spain's midfield. Yet his attacking enthusiasm sometimes left him behind when Spain transitioned quickly. During the break, Doku tried to track Porro as the latter prepared to cross, but Maxim De Cuyper's marking of Yamal allowed Fábian Ruiz to seize the chance and score.
Belgium Fight Back
Spain gradually took control of the game, moving the ball past overcommitted Belgian defenders and attacking the spaces they left behind. Still, Belgium refused to sit back and watch. Charles De Ketelaere, who had netted twice in the previous round, showed the tactical awareness he had developed working with Romelu Lukaku. In the thirty-ninth minute, the Atalanta forward went down after Aymeric Laporte fouled him during a throw-in near Belgium's penalty area.
Two minutes later, the ball reached Belgium's right flank where Kevin De Bruyne played a perfect pass to Timothy Castagne. The right-back's delivery found the diving De Ketelaere, who placed himself cleverly on the near side of Pau Cubarsí to head home Belgium's first shot on target, equalizing the score. Spain responded quickly, but Belgium kept threatening through Doku's skillful dribbling. Even though he seemed affected by what appeared to be a breathing issue, the Manchester City player's runs opened up vital space for De Cuyper and other midfielders. Belgium nearly took the lead when Doku combined with De Bruyne, but De Cuyper's deflected effort missed the goal.
Veterans Leave Their Legacy
Garcia's side showed far more heart than the team that exited the group stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and fell at the last-sixteen stage of Euro 2024. Leandro Trossard was replaced after an hour of limited impact as part of a three-player substitution, bringing on Romelu Lukaku while De Ketelaere moved to the wing. Axel Witsel came on at the same time, placing all four veterans from Belgium's 2014 World Cup squad on the pitch with thirty minutes left.
These seasoned players worked hard to plug holes in the Belgian defense. Yet the aging group began to show signs of fatigue. Thibaut Courtois remained essential between the posts, but a spectacular save just before the second-half break left him holding his left hip. After trying to stay on, the goalkeeper needed to be replaced in the seventy-first minute, leaving the field in tears as fans from both teams stood to applaud one of the game's finest goalkeepers. Senne Lammens came on to take his place.
Kevin De Bruyne also dealt with physical issues, sitting down after a long-range attempt in the eightieth minute. He picked up a yellow card five minutes later for a poor tackle on Ferran Torres, leading Garcia to use his last substitution to bring off the veteran before Spain could exploit his reduced mobility. Unfortunately, Lammens could not stop the inevitable. Pau Cubarsí launched a hopeful shot
