The whales’ departure concludes a contentious chapter in Canadian marine park history. However, experts note that even the improved conditions awaiting them may not fully resolve all concerns regarding their wellbeing. Phil Demers, who spent over a decade training whales at Marineland between 2000 and 2012 before becoming one of the facility’s most vocal critics, expressed cautious optimism about the situation.

“There’s obviously some relief, but it’s hard for me to frankly endorse any of the facilities that these animals are going to,” Demers explained. “I’m happy for the animals. I just know that the fight for their improved existence will probably last their entire lifetimes.”

Demers remains hopeful that American aquariums will provide better oversight than their Canadian counterparts, though he acknowledges that no facility is perfect for these highly social creatures.

The Fall of Marineland

Marineland’s history stretches back to the early 1960s, when it first opened its doors to visitors. The park eventually became home to one of the world’s largest collections of captive whales. However, its reputation deteriorated significantly over the years. By 2024, declining attendance, negative media coverage, and new legislation had effectively closed the park to the public.

Tragedy struck repeatedly at the facility. According to records gathered by the Canadian Press, twenty whales perished at Marineland since 2019, including nineteen belugas and a single orca. The passing of a federal law in 2019 that prohibited the sale, captivity, and breeding of dolphins and whales accelerated the park’s decline. This legislation, combined with dwindling visitor numbers and persistent reports of inadequate living conditions, created a perfect storm for the struggling institution.

Disputes soon escalated into open conflict between Marineland, Canadian authorities, and animal rights organizations. Government officials prevented Marineland from transferring its whales to a Chinese theme park, citing concerns about potential mistreatment. In response, Marineland issued a dramatic ultimatum in October 2025, threatening to euthanize all thirty of its belugas unless the federal government provided financial assistance.

Transportation and New Beginnings

Last month, a comprehensive agreement was reached between Canada and Marineland. The deal called for relocating the belugas to a network of American aquariums located in Georgia, Chicago, San Diego, and San Antonio, alongside the Oceanogràfic València aquarium in Spain.

On Monday, the six departing whales were carefully lifted from their tanks using slings and transported to Toronto Pearson international airport. From there, they boarded planes bound for their new homes. Sierra, Acadia, Osiris, and Lillooet arrived at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, while Bertie Botts and Frankie were sent to SeaWorld in San Antonio, according to Canadian Press reports.

“Once the rescued whales arrive safely at Shedd, the belugas will have access to a diverse variety of nutritional seafood items to eat, healthy habitats, clean water and plenty of individualised care,” Shedd Aquarium stated on July 8.

“Our commitment is clear. These whales need help and we are ready to help them,” SeaWorld San Antonio emphasized in its response to the arrivals.

Ongoing Concerns

Despite the positive developments, not everyone is celebrating. Marineland currently houses twenty-four additional whales and two dolphins. The Canadian advocacy organization Animal Justice continues to express reservations about the situation, particularly regarding Marineland’s communication practices.

“Marineland has never been honest with the public about the health of these sensitive, highly intelligent animals, and that pattern of secrecy hasn’t changed now that a handful of whales are finally being moved out,” said Camille Labchuk, the group’s executive director.

Animal Justice is urging American aquariums to ensure that the relocated whales will not participate in breeding programs or forced performances, both of which are now prohibited under Canadian legislation. Marineland itself acknowledged the importance of the transition, telling the Canadian Press that “above all else, the safe, healthy, and comfortable transfer of these whales to their new homes remains our unwavering priority.”
