Chalamet thanked by Royal Ballet and Opera boss for boosting ticket sales

Chalamet Praised by Royal Ballet and Opera Director for Boosting Sales

Alex Beard, the head of the Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO), expressed gratitude toward Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet for increasing the London-based organization’s ticket sales after his remarks sparked debate about ballet and opera’s relevance.

Actor’s Comments Sparked Unexpected Public Engagement

Beard revealed to The Times that Chalamet’s earlier statement, which suggested “no-one cares” about classical performing arts anymore, generated a significant response. “The reaction was fantastic,” Beard remarked, highlighting the actor’s influence.

“We opted to respond with a straightforward, ‘Take a look at what we’re doing, mate’—for example, noting that our most frequent audience is aged 20 to 30.”

The social media campaign following the comment saw two and a half million interactions and half a million shares on Instagram, Beard noted. “Our ticket sales rose right away. So cheers, Timmy!” he said with a touch of humor.

Chalamet’s Remarks Triggered Mixed Reactions

Timothée Chalamet’s comments, made during a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas in February, initially drew criticism from stage professionals. He described ballet and opera as art forms that struggle to maintain interest, saying, “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.'”

“All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there,” he quickly added, acknowledging the potential misinterpretation of his words.

Despite the backlash, some institutions saw the opportunity to leverage the conversation. The Seattle Opera, for instance, launched a targeted promotion for a Carmen performance, offering discounts with the promo code “TIMOTHEE” to ticket buyers. The campaign even invited Chalamet to use the code, adding a playful note to the strategy.

Director Defends Pricing Strategy Amid Controversy

In a broader interview with The Times as he began his 14th season at Covent Garden, Beard also addressed the RBO’s recent pricing adjustments. He clarified, “Our approach isn’t full-on dynamic pricing. Prices remain fixed during the initial booking phase and for the first few weeks of public sales. Lower tiers are constant, and top-tier tickets have a maximum cap.”

“Tweaking the top price could help keep lower prices stable,” Beard explained, distinguishing the policy from more aggressive pricing models.
