Tories urge Waitrose to reinstate worker sacked ‘after tackling shoplifter’

Tories Push for Waitrose to Rehire Employee Dismissed After Confronting Shoplifter

Conservative politicians have urged Waitrose to reinstate an employee who claims he was fired following a brief altercation with a shoplifter. Walker Smith, 54, told the Guardian that he was let go from his job after 17 years of service, just two days after a confrontation at a Clapham Junction store in south London. The incident involved a struggle over Easter eggs, which the shoplifter had stolen, leading to a short scuffle before the individual escaped.

Employee’s Account of the Incident

Smith explained that he felt compelled to intervene after witnessing frequent thefts at the store over the past five years. “It’s everyone from drug addicts to teenagers taking small items or walking out with bottles of wine,” he said. He added that he regretted his actions but believed he had a duty to act, stating, “We’re not allowed to do anything.”

“Staff safety must come first. But dismissing a long-serving employee in these circumstances sends entirely the wrong message,” said Chris Philp, shadow home secretary. “It penalises those who act, while offenders are left unchecked.”

Waitrose’s Defense

Waitrose has defended its decision, insisting the case does not represent the full picture. A spokesperson noted, “While we would never be able to discuss an individual case, we can assure you the correct process is being followed, including a standard appeals procedure.” The retailer emphasized its commitment to safety, citing policies designed to protect both staff and customers. “There is a serious danger to life in tackling shoplifters,” they stated, “and we refuse to put anyone’s life at risk.”

“We have campaigned for some time for more to be done to protect shop workers from offenders,” the spokesperson added. “Retail crime being made into a specific stand-alone offence is a priority.”

Political Criticism and Broader Context

Philp accused Waitrose of acting “disgracefully,” arguing the dismissal could lead to the employee losing his home. He suggested Smith should not only be reinstated but also receive a bonus for his “bravery and initiative.” Meanwhile, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage echoed the criticism, writing on X: “We are now a country that favours criminals over law enforcers.”

According to the Guardian, the incident began when Smith seized a bag containing £13 worth of Easter eggs. A struggle ensued, during which one chocolate egg broke. He described throwing the piece out of frustration toward shopping trolleys. Despite apologizing to the manager, the situation was escalated, prompting his termination.
