Russian attack on Ukraine market kills five

A drone strike by Russia in southern Ukraine has left five civilians dead and 21 others wounded, according to the prosecutor general’s office. The incident occurred at 09:50 local time (06:50 GMT) in Nikopol, a town situated near the Dnipro River, bordering territory under Russian control since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Images released by the regional prosecutor show the aftermath of the attack, with market stalls reduced to rubble and debris scattered across the ground. The damage includes shattered glass, metal fragments, and remnants of food items. The strike targeted a bustling area, contributing to a high number of casualties. This follows reports of at least 15 civilians killed in drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on Friday.

“The attacks are being investigated as a potential war crime,” stated the prosecutor, highlighting the severity of the incident in Nikopol. Two additional men were injured in a subsequent strike on the same location.

Meanwhile, Ukraine retaliated by launching drone and missile strikes against Taganrog, a southern Russian city. The attack resulted in one fatality and four serious injuries, as confirmed by Russian authorities. Rostov regional governor Yuri Slyusar reported a fire at a logistics company’s premises in Taganrog, though the exact cause remains under scrutiny.

Russian forces have intensified their daytime operations, which were once uncommon. This surge includes nearly 300 drones deployed overnight, with casualties reported in Kharkiv and the Sumy region. Ukraine’s defense ministry attributed the damage to “Russian air defence operations,” while a security service official noted that a second strike on a factory in Alchevsk, a Russian-occupied area of Ukraine’s Luhansk region, disrupted production at a metallurgical plant.

Zelensky has proposed a temporary ceasefire during the Easter holiday period, but Moscow has yet to respond. The escalation of attacks coincides with stalled peace efforts led by the United States, as Trump’s administration redirected focus toward the Middle East conflict.
